Dr Luke Evans, Member of Parliament for Hinckley and Bosworth, has welcomed confirmation that “much-needed” improvements to the A5 between Dodwells and Longshoot have been included in the Government’s latest Road Investment Strategy (RIS3).
The inclusion marks a significant step forward following years of sustained campaigning by local partners, including Dr Luke Evans, Midlands Connect, local councils, other neighbouring MPs and road users across the area.
The Department for Transport has confirmed that National Highways can now continue developing plans for the scheme. Subject to business case approval, construction is expected to begin between 2031/32 and 2035/36.
While acknowledging the long timeline, Dr Luke Evans MP emphasised that securing a place in the national strategy is a “critical” milestone, particularly as many similar projects across the country were not included.
In more immediate news, work to address the long-standing issues at the Watling Street bridge – Britain’s most bashed bridge - is set to begin within weeks.
The project will involve major engineering works to lower the road beneath the railway bridge which, following National Rail data published in December 2025, was found to be the most bashed bridge in Britain.
Dr Luke Evans, Member of Parliament for Hinckley and Bosworth, said “This is a major step forward for our area. After years of campaigning, it’s a real achievement to see the A5 Dodwells to Longshoot scheme included in the Government’s national strategy, especially when many other projects did not make the cut.
“While construction is still some years away, being part of RIS3 means we are firmly on the path to delivering the improvements our community has long needed.
“In the meantime, it is very welcome news that work on the Watling Street bridge is about to begin. This has been a persistent problem for years, causing disruption not just on the A5 but across Hinckley, Burbage and our surrounding villages.
“There will be disruption while this work is carried out, but it is long overdue and will make a lasting difference for residents and road users alike.”
